Latrine pictures!

Work almost finished in Rugerero

We are in the final stretch with the latrine replacements/repairs in the village of Rugerero. Work has been slow and steady over the past few months. To date there have been 27 latrines replaced and 10 latrines fixed in the past 18 months. The plan now is to complete the remaining 5 latrines repairs by January 15th, 2010!! The funds to complete these latrines have been sent to Rwanda. This project has been a learning process for the team.....we are happy to see the project this close to the finish line

The Rwanda team will be traveling again to Rwanda in early February to begin work on the local health clinic latrine and start assessing the nearby Twa village.

Post-Implementation Trip

Both of the Bobs have returned to Rwanda to follow up on the latrine construction project and explore possibilities for future projects. We received a message from the Bob's on Saturday. When they arrived they found out that Samajeli was put into jail for a crime unrelated to the project two months ago for bribing an offical. Then the second mason was also put into jail they think also for bribing an official. As a result, the project has not been progressing too quickly over the last two months. The Bob's were going to check the 10 latrines that had been destroyed in some manner on Sunday or Monday. Also they texted today. They have completed an assessment of the village. They said that all completed latrines look good but didn't give too much detail on the broken latrines.

Latrine Construction Progress

The team of masons in Rwanda has been busy working on latrines during the last two months. The table below shows a list of completed latrine replacements and repairs. The House numbers corresopond to the numbers on the map (which may be hard to read in this image - sorry).

Currently funds are running low in Rwanda and we are preparing to send additional funds to keep the project on track.
